I am obsessed with Isaiah 43. It’s true, obsession is usually a negative thing…but when it’s scripture…it’s all good.
Isaiah 43:1 “…Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”
Do not fear. God knew this would be hard. He knew that the next step might stop us cold, trembling and quaking. How can we take a step we can’t see? And the Almighty God wants us to know a secret: we don’t need to fear. We have a choice here. Will you fear? Or trust? Please know that trust always feels scary – courage is not the absence of fear, it’s the willingness to move forward anyway.
I have redeemed you. Before you even knew you needed rescuing, God was reaching for you. Before you heard the word ‘sin’ for the first time, Jesus had spoken the words, “Father, forgive them…” on the cross. Before you could ask for a Saviour, He was knocking on the door of your heart. He redeemed YOU. Merriam-Webster has plenty of definitions for redeem: to buy back, to get or win back, to free from what distresses or harms, to free from captivity by payment of ransom, to release from blame or debt, to extricate from or help to overcome something detrimental. He bought you back. He freed you from your troubles. He paid the ransom for your heart. Do not fear – you are FREE.
I have summoned you by name. Almighty God, King of Kings, Holy of Holies, Creator, Saviour, Lord of Lords, Mighty Counselor, Mighty to Save, Emmanuel – God With Us, Lord of Hosts…the King on his throne is in the throne room and He sees you, there in the back; He’s beckoning, calling you by name. He is summoning you by name because He chose you for this journey. The Author of your story is also the Author of your faith. He chose you. For this. Right now. Trust Him and know that underneath are the everlasting arms.
You are Mine. Are you on your knees yet? I can hardly imagine. He who calls the stars by name? He who raised the mountains and the dead? He who filled the oceans and fulfilled every prophecy and promise? He who hung the heavenly bodies in place and hung on the cross, conquering the grave? King, Saviour, Broken, Risen, Lover, Brother, Friend, God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – I am His? Let those words, spoken by the Lover of your soul, be the anthem of this next step. You are Mine. You are not alone.
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
